What is Smishing?

Smishing is the combination of SMS +Phishing = Smishing.  Smishing is the technique which hackers use to trick people through SMS. By sending SMS they extract sensitive information, make people to visit to the risky site and download malicious apps. These SMS are sent to the users to confirm bank details, verify account information or subscribe to an email newsletter via link delivered by SMS. www.webroot.com/secure

Smishing Technique:

  1. Send a link so that you download malicious app:

Through this technique, hackers send you the SMS with the attachment or link so that you click on that link. In that link they send you the malicious app so that click it and download it.   1. Linking to information through online forms:

This is a classic tech support scam. In this, SMS directs the users to call the customer support line via number. The scammer took all the sensitive information on call by representing as a customer care representative.

How to prevent it?

  1. Check the spelling and grammar of the text message before sending information.
  2. Check the sender’s website and check its phone numbers and verify it.
  3. Do not provide payment and personal information if it is not a trusted website.
  4. Do not click on links send by unknown senders.
  5. Always type the web address on the browser before clicking it.
